There are many legends behind the MahaShivaRatri, the Great Night of Lord Shiva.
While returning from his daily hunt, a poor tribal hunter, Lubdhaka, heard tigers growling.
He climbed a nearby ‘Bel’ tree & prayed to Lord Shiva to save his life.
To stop himself from falling asleep, he started plucking leaves from the tree and dropping them to the ground.
Only in the morning did he realize that he had been dropping the leaves on a Shivalinga.
The night was of Mahashivratri, & pleased with the offerings, Lord Shiva saved Lubdhaka’s life.
